Luxottica’s objective is to safeguard the areas in which it operates and the physical and natural resources that enable us to protect and enhance the value of the company.
As a manufacturing company, we know that our business activities have an impact on the environment. While our impact is not as substantial as other sectors, we recognise that we have a responsibility to manage this impact and reduce our footprint. Areas of environmental impact include:
• Procurement and use of raw materials in the design of our products
• Use of energy, water and production of waste in our production process
• Materials used in the packaging of our products
• Office and store energy usage, and emissions from the transport and distribution of our products
• Staff and company travel
We pursue our commitment to respect compulsory standards, and standards regulating the protection of the environment with rigour. Beyond compliance, Luxottica has a long-standing objective of guaranteeing ethically responsible conduct on the part of its employees, production sites and branches and thereby ensure Group-wide implementation of its environmental sustainability and protection policies.
We manufacture most of our products in our own factories and we are able to apply the same high standards to safeguard the well-being of our people and protect the environment.
In 2011, we launched a new company-wide review of our environmental impact across our operations to identify new ways to reduce our impact and focus on key areas to achieve our objectives. Working with our partners, we are undertaking a Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) across our value chain to prioritise areas for further action.
We are also quickly advancing the environmental certification of our facilities using the ISO 14001 system, which is based on standard procedures and controls supported by continuous monitoring and updating of improvement areas and objectives in the field of safety and the environment. In the future, this management system may be integrated with the ISO 9000 quality system (standards and guidelines for quality management systems designed to optimize business process organization) which has been in place in the Group’s facilities for years.
We are proud of our commitment and achievements to date but we know we have a long way ahead. Like everything that we do, our approach to safeguarding our environment is an ongoing journey.
