Luxottica starts national production of masks at PalaLuxottica in Agordo

Surgical masks, when correctly used, are a fundamental device for preventing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luxottica therefore promptly responded to the call of the Italian Government and of the Extraordinary Commissioner for the COVID-19 Emergency Domenico Arcuri and, in collaboration with Fameccanica (Angelini Group), worked tirelessly in recent months to start, in early September during the first days of the 2020/2021 school year, the production of surgical masks in Italy as part of the government’s wider internal procurement plan.

The space chosen for this new production is PalaLuxottica in Agordo, a recently built sustainable site in the province of Belluno: a symbolic place for Luxottica, created as a hub for networking and socio-cultural events, which was converted in just over two months into a national facility to combat the new coronavirus, featuring the installation of ultra-modern, automated machinery for the production of masks for adults and children.

Two teams of specialized technicians from Luxottica and Fameccanica worked non-stop over the summer to identify needs and solutions in very close collaboration and under the supervision of the body led by Commissioner Arcuri.

There are four special production lines inside PalaLuxottica, made in Italy by Fameccanica, which guarantee high production speed and the necessary flexibility for the use of different material set-ups. One hundred shift workers supervise the correct functioning of the production processes and guarantee the necessary quality controls.

The temporary production center will operate night and day throughout the emergency period and will be able to produce up to approximately 3 million masks per day, thoroughly examined by the Commissioner’s team and already authorized by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in compliance with the Decree Law of 27 March 2020 and subsequent amendments.
