35 students in one of the top fashion design schools in the United States - the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning - worked side by side over 15 weeks with Luxottica’s experts and mentors in the Luxottica Collaborative Studio. Grouped into six teams, the students participated in a competition that tested their entrepreneurial spirit, talent and creativity to design eyewear collections exclusively for LensCrafters.

Third Culture, the winning collection, reflects the authentic lifestyle of the young, urban pioneers of our time and explorers of the world. It represents the path of creating our own identity, through the melding of our roots (first culture) with the wealth of experiences gained from the wanderings around the world (second culture). The logo reflects the three parts of this identity: where we come from, where we travel and the knowledge we return with.

The collection is inspired by the rich colors and customs of New Zealand's natural landscape and Maori people, weaving adventure and discovery into the new styles. The abalone, a native mollusk with beautifully colored shells used to create works of art and jewelry, influenced the rich color scheme of the frames. The exclusive tortoise colorations are paired with a variety of metal finishes, shiny or matte.

The subtle step-cuts and etched details are inspired by the beautiful woodcarvings and tattoos of the Maori people, merging a contemporary vibe with ritual and tradition. Wave-shaped temples, where the Third Culture logo is located, reflect the spirit of crossing oceans and leave an authentic mark to the collection.

Available in LensCrafters stores starting now, you’ll find Third Culture on LensCrafters official website as well. Watch the videos below to find out the students’ adventures in the Luxottica Collaborative Studio, from the idea to the first sketches to the final design.
