COSTA ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST PURPOSE REPORT

Given its strong connection to water, a precious resource, protection of the world’s oceans and waterways is of vital importance to Costa, a U.S.-based brand founded by anglers. This is why the eyewear brand, which specializes in on-the-water performance, continues to offer not only products, but also initiatives and partnerships that protect marine and freshwater ecosystems, committing to a leading role in protecting the environment that it has been exploring for nearly 40 years.

Its goal is to empower a community that is actively involved in protecting aquatic environments, thereby restoring healthier oceans and waterways for future generations.  The figures and details on what has been accomplished to date have been compiled in the first edition of Costa’s Purpose Report, including: three million single-use water bottles eliminated, 90 tons of trash removed from U.S. beaches and shorelines and 100,000 young people educated on conservation. Moreover, the document discusses products such as the Untangled Collection of sunglasses and optical frames created using discarded fishing nets or eyewear made of Bio-Resin, a material partly derived from castor bean seeds: a renewable and natural resource that requires very little water for cultivation and helps reduce the brand’s carbon footprint. In addition to sunglasses and apparel, the Report covers initiatives such as Kick Plastic which, as well as raising awareness about how single-use plastic damages the ecosystem and its possible alternatives, has yielded concrete results: Through the Kick Plastic initiative, more than 3 million single-use plastic bottles have been replaced with refillable options and 4 tons of polycarbonate lenses have been recycled thanks to the commitment. Since 2016, Costa guides, fishing communities and brand partners  have joined the  movement, pledging not to start trips or expeditions carrying single-use plastic bottles.

With these and other activities contained in the Purpose Report, Costa is committed to supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These activities not only serve to protect life under water, but also to promote responsible use of resources, conservation of biodiversity and natural habitats, and to empower job creation and better living conditions for those who, living in rural or remote areas, thrive thanks to tourism and activities connected to the natural world.

From the ocean to the smallest waterway, Costa is committed to preserving and protecting the environment that led to the brand’s inception and has permitted its people to create extraordinary, on-the-water eyewear. Through the support of its extended “tribe” united by the same goal, Costa is building a strong community that engages in action. Love of water and its importance as a fundamental element in everyone’s lives is what drives the brand’s daily commitment to preserving it from human impact.
