Burberry’s new women’s eyewear collection for Autumn/Winter 2015 is inspired by English heritage lace and the iconic trench coat fabric, the gabardine.   

Gabardine Lace

The collection draws inspiration from the Burberry runway styles for this Autumn/Winter, including  a savvy blend of 1970s-style bohemian details, romantic floral patterns and embroidered-lace. Particularly inspiring is Leavers lace, produced since 1813 in Nottingham, in England, once the heart of the world’s lace making industry.

The feminine, sinuous frames come with English heritage lace motifs detailed on the gold metal temples, which are inspired by draped gabardine lace. An heritage craftsmanship technique is used to recreate the texture of the lightweight, innovative gabardine fabric. The romantic effect of the English heritage lace is recreated on the metal temples through a casting process traditionally used in fine jewellery and sculpture, helping fashion an even more luxurious, and elegant collection.

Shapes include feminine butterfly and square acetate sun frames and square and cat-eye acetate optical frames. Available in a range of materials, colours and styles, the Gabardine Lace Collection includes polished metal and acetate frames. The acetate colour palette features tortoiseshell, dark amber gradient, and military red gradient.

The collection is revealed by British actresses Holliday Grainger and Clara Paget in the global Autumn/Winter advertising campaign, shot in London by Mario Testino under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey.
