The Ralph Lauren Automotive Aluminum Collection

The Ralph Lauren Automotive Aluminum Collection

Ralph Lauren is well known for being one of the world’s foremost collectors of classic cars. His collection is exemplary not only for its quantity and variety but primarily for the unique models he has collected over the years. In 2011, an exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris celebrated his collection, giving the general public an opportunity to admire some of his most prized examples, including the 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe and the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing.

Inspired by his passion for cars and fascination with mechanical design, Ralph Lauren launched his first automotive eyewear collection in 2012 as a special project. Drawing on the interior aesthetic of vintage cars, the collection replicates the effect of walnut wood on the front or temples of frames using an exclusive acetate.

Three years later, the Ralph Lauren Automotive Eyewear Collection launched a new special-edition capsule, featuring three sunglasses and three optical models. The distinctive use of aluminum, perforated leather and two small screws on either side of the logo speaks to the bodywork of classic sports cars, as well as to the detailed manufacturing and artisanal quality of each pair.

The complex process of crafting aluminum requires several steps, starting with a single aluminum block that is worked through to a mill finish in order to create each individual piece. Each component is then manually polished, and every color (aside from natural aluminum) is attained through a thorough anodizing process. Finally, perforated leather is applied by hand to the temple tips of the sunglass frames.

Crafted in a pilot silhouette from a single piece of aluminum with vintage hinges at the front temples, the unisex sunglass model RL 7049Q is one of the focal points of the collection. Finished with sophisticated end pieces in perforated leather, this pair is sold with a solid aluminum case embellished with a Ralph Lauren plaque and vintage screws.

For men, the sunglass model RL 8133Q showcases a square acetate frame and lightweight temples in aluminum, while a pilot model RL 7050Q for women offers the perfect balance of aluminum and perforated leather details on the front.

The prescription eyeglasses for men and women combine acetate fronts with lightweight aluminum temples, and each pair comes in a special perforated leather case.
