The origins of the word “mentor” are ancient. In the Odyssey he was the wise master who looked after and guided Telemachus during the absence of his father Ulysses. Translated into corporate language, the mentor is an expert who helps younger people (mentees) face the professional journey and challenges that await them, and is willing to listen, offer advice and support. However, the mentor is also a model of inspiration.

In its 5 years of life Valore D, an association of leading companies (including Luxottica) founded in Italy to promote female leadership and talent in the growth of companies and the country, has promoted various projects to support and increase the presence of women in leadership positions. One of the latest projects is GenerAzioni, a mentorship programme for students from four prestigious Italian universities (Bocconi, Luiss, Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice and Trento University).

For six months, from June 2014 to January 2015, almost 100 students will be followed by as many skilled mentors. The project will only involve women managers from various backgrounds (finance, consultancy, industry, law, start-ups) from leading Italian and international companies. These women, however, have one thing in common: they have already participated in “In the Boardroom”, the training programme for members of boards of directors, promoted by Valore D in partnership with GE.

Who are the students? University students who were considered the most motivated and worthy, without any gender distinction, average age 23 and mainly from Economics, International Relations, Law and Engineering departments.

They have great expectations and are aware that the programme is a unique occasion to benefit from the experience of an established professional. A professional from whom they will receive advice and concrete support to guide their studies and help them enter the working world or focus and enhance their strong points. Someone from whom they can learn first-hand about the corporate reality and discover how commitment and perseverance lead to recognition of value and merit. Also (and above all) for women.
